Accompanying
Kevin Guess has been active as an accompanist since he began as an undergrad at the University of Houston. Soon he was playing for various voice and instrumental studios and then for the UH Opera Theater. While in graduate school he became involved with the studio of the wonderful voice teacher Lois Alba Wachter where he played for lessons, voice studio classes, recitals and stage productions of one act operas, including Pagliacci by Leoncavello and Suor Angelica by Puccini. Simultaneously, he served as rehearsal accompanist and orchestral pianist for many productions by the UH Opera Theater, class pianist for the Houston Ballet Academy and gave the Texas premier, with flutist Ema Armenius, of Variations for Flute and Piano by Robert Beaser. Upon graduating, Mr. Guess began an a long association with HITS Theater in the Heights, serving as Music Director and later, upon resigning to devote more time to teaching, as associate music director. There he played and arranged music for class shows, as well as, preparing the orchestra and chorus for and conducting the annual Miller Outdoor Theater shows, including Bye Bye Birdie and Annie Get Your Gun.
In 2007, Mr. Guess became staff accompanist with the Lone Star College system at the North Harris Campus for many years and since leaving there at the University Park Campus. At North Harris, besides recitals and choir concerts, he played in the orchestra for various musicals, with the jazz band in various concerts and served as music director for Godspell. Along the way he has played for OrchestraX, Lee College jazz Band, Houstonian Big Band, San Jacinto College North, Ermelinda & Friends jazz group and for countless independent recitals and UIL local and state events. In 2026 he accompanied for 52 UIL band solos in one day, including many class 1 solos such as Premier Rhapsodie for Saxaphone by Debussy, Cavatine for Trombone by Saint-Saens, Sonata for Trumpet and piano by Kennan and Concerto for Trombone by Rimsky-Korsakov.
